Finding purpose in gratitude: The 8 years where I lost a grandfather but gained a direction

Many years ago, a seismic personal experience left a lasting impression on me. I didn’t realise it at the time, but it would go on to shape my life and provide purpose and direction for me to this day.

My grandfather was a great man. And like most grandsons, I had a special and cherished connection with him. I looked up to him for guidance, advice and how to be a man. Incredibly, we even shared a birthday — it was almost as if the universe set us up to have our unbreakable bond.

He was many things to many people. A pillar of the community, a gentleman who wore a hat and a suit everyday, and someone who helped people and was greatly respected and loved.

It’s never easy seeing a family member face their own mortality. It’s something we’ll all have to deal with at some point in our lives of course, but it doesn’t make the experience any less painful.

So, after he suffered a series of devastating strokes, it was like an earthquake shook the ground beneath my feet.

To see my grandfather, once so full of life, be confined to a bed almost overnight was a shock to my system to say the least. But there was one saving grace that made the pain of that moment bearable both for my grandfather and our family.

A very special group of people

Doctors, nurses, specialists, and carers are incredible individuals.

Their dedication in providing constant and expert medical care to my grandfather after his life was changed in an instant not only lifted his spirits, but it also gave him the dignity he so rightly deserved for a life well-lived.

“They might have just been doing their jobs, but for eight long years, my grandfather’s medical team took care of him with a large dose of generosity and humanity — all the while caring for dozens of others.”

This left a deep impression on me. The incredibly warm and genuine care and support he received from his nurses and doctors over his final years was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

One day after visiting my grandfather in care, I started thinking about how I could repay the favour to this extremely decent group of people not just in his hospice, but right across the country.

These people who give up their lives to help others, who work so tirelessly, and do it all without expecting any favours or fanfare in return.

They sustain life, so we’re here to make the most of theirs

My token of gratitude to thank Australia’s medical professionals for their service was to use my own skills in the finance and property fields to help set up their lives.

Those who know me know how passionate I am about helping people — just like my grandfather did. So to help those who dedicate their own lives to helping others was something that just felt like it was the best thing to do — it was a confluence of my values and skills meeting at exactly the right moment.

Obviously, providing medical professionals with a financial service is by no means a ‘like for like’ when you’re comparing caring for human lives with investing or getting into the property market. But the truth is it’s something we can offer to add genuine (and literal) value to our customers’ lives.

“Just like my grandfather was shown such selfless levels of care, we’ve also taken great care to build our company around servicing workers in an industry with a very unique set of traits and needs.”

When all is said and done, I can genuinely say that our focus on providing a highly specialised service to medical professionals comes from a very real, and very personal place.

At the same time, we are resolute in our mission to help everyone. While we’re passionate about helping our friends in the medical industry, that passion extends beyond occupation and careers.

I’ll always cherish those last years with my ‘dedi’ — I just hope I’ve made him proud by helping the people who helped him.
