Oceans Apart: How an Aussie Expat Built His Property Dream Back Home

As an Australian expat living in a foreign land, international lawyer, Jason, still managed to grow his property portfolio back home. Here’s how.

Jason understands the value of hard work. It’s opened doors for him in life at home and abroad both figuratively and literally.

An international lawyer by trade, Jason’s skills led him to the United Arab Emirates where he joined thousands of other Australian expats chasing their dreams offshore. But despite his adventurous spirit, Jason will be the first to tell you that a part of him remains firmly planted back home.

As his career progressed, so did his interest in property, and naturally his gaze turned back towards the investment opportunities his homeland had to offer.

“After sitting on the fence for a while, I knew it was time to take the next step to make it happen,” he explains.

But a big question remained unanswered for Jason: was it really possible to have the best of both worlds?

Seeing the dream

As someone with first-hand experience in dealing with the complexities of various legal and banking systems, Jason remained realistic yet undeterred from turning his dreams into a tangible reality.

Hoping for a relatively simple transaction, he soon realised enlisting the help of experts — especially in the case of expats and the hidden tax and fee curveballs that can be thrown up — was the best way forward.

“I immediately noticed that Pristine were in my corner as they proactively monitored the best products and rates for my situation and even secured retrospective rebates months after the fact.”

Two development opportunities were soon identified that ticked all the boxes for Jason; a block of land in a picturesque coastal location south of Sydney, and an exciting development opportunity in Melbourne’s inner-west.

A valuable perspective

Intricacies around how Australian banks evaluate foreign income, currencies and assets can all too often derail expat property aspirations, and that’s exactly why Jason put his faith in Pristine to catch the curveballs before they were thrown.

“The reality on the ground can be totally different to what you read or perceive,” explains Jason. “This is where I really valued an informed perspective.”

“I was just confident that the entire team would be on my side,” he added. “They worked diligently and strategically on my goals.”

That extended to the local knowledge, connections and advice that precipitated pulling the trigger on the two properties for Jason which settled quickly.

“I really trusted the team’s advice — so much so that I felt completely comfortable purchasing the Melbourne land sight unseen.”

The journey continues

For Jason, his experience has only opened his eyes to more possibilities.

For us, that means uncovering more opportunities to turn the possible into the real.

For all expats and their financial aspirations, it’s a genuine pathway to good wealth — even if the journey starts on the other side of the world.

“The proof was in the pudding for me,” he adds. “I was more than happy to refer another expat friend of mine to Pristine after my deal.”

If you’re an Aussie expat like Jason and you’re thinking about getting into property or building your portfolio, he has some parting words of wisdom to share:

“Don’t sit on the fence. Just step forward and have that first discussion.”

Wise words indeed!
