Making connections and realising dreams: Manuel’s way of doing things.

When my parents migrated to Australia from Portugal in the 1970s, they chose Sydney to settle down and start a new life.

Despite the culture shock of relocating to the other side of the world, they soon began to recognise common ground between the two different cultures. Although the differences were real, they understood the value of forging genuine connections within their local community through a universal language of friendship.

Watching my parents build a successful life for their family after starting from scratch was the ultimate life lesson for me. Along with the example they set in being decent people, they also taught me the importance of family, determination and hard work.

Fast forward to 2023 and I’ve been in the finance and banking industry for over 35 years now. And what still gets me up every morning is the opportunity to connect with people to help them achieve their own goals.

Some may think working in finance and helping others is slightly incongruous on face value, but the opportunities that exist as a finance broker to improve lives never ceases to amaze me.

I’ve also found that it allows my life philosophies and work philosophies to crossover daily. My determination, tactical thinking, and empathy in my personal life often leaches into my professional life — whether it’s putting myself in my customers’ shoes, or simply finding the best finance option for someone with a unique set of circumstances.

Making connections has always been a central theme in my life, and it’s probably why I tend to view every customer as a friend as well.

It reminds me of one customer who was knocked back by multiple big lenders before he came to me. In his mid-70s, no bank was prepared to take his mortgage on, but the more I got to know him and his story, the more determined I was to help him reach his goals. He had recently retired from a successful career, and just wanted to realise his passion for building and renovating properties. By thinking outside of the box, I managed to secure him a 30-year loan for a block of land.

As a dad, I love watching my kids try hard and find success too. We volunteer together as surf lifesavers, I simply enjoy giving them the opportunity to do what makes them happy.

In my spare time, you might catch me cutting laps with my cycling club around The Royal National Park, Sutherland or Sublime Point. And while I’m not the fastest, I’m certainly the most determined! Whether it’s professionally, on the sporting field, or in my personal life, I’ll break a leg before I give up.

Similarly, the relentless pursuit of helping others realise their dreams is something I’ll never tire of. I might have my folks to thank for this outlook, but I’m more than happy to share it with everyone around me if it makes their lives better.
